In addition to departmental offerings, important parts of every student's academic experience at Harvard are supported by the work of a number of specialized programs. Some of these, such as the Core Program and Expository Writing, provide essential parts of a Harvard College education. Growing numbers of students are taking advantage of the Freshman Seminar program, which offers small-group instruction in topics framed with an eye toward bringing students together with faculty members working at the forefront of their fields, and placing the excitement of new scholarship directly into the first year experience. Harvard's opportunities for study abroad are also growing, as more and more students want to incorporate a direct experience of a different culture into their academic programs. There are programs as well for students interested in teaching careers, in advanced language study and in pursuing academic work at the graduate level while still remaining in the College.
