COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE DEAN Message to Students from Dean Gross

  • David Pilbeam
  • Dean of Harvard College
November 2006

To All Students of Harvard College,

In the midst of a very active time on campus and in the greater Cambridge community, I write to remind you of your role as responsible neighbors. With our vibrant campus environment operating at all hours, it is easy to forget that we are part of a residential community that extends beyond Harvards student body.

This fall, Cambridge Police and HUPD have experienced an increase in registered complaints related to excessive noise and loitering in Cambridge city streets. As a result, Cambridge Police will be increasing their presence in the area on evening patrols. The College is seeking ways to address the problem by providing additional evening shuttle service, but these measures alone will not solve the problem. I ask that you moderate your behavior in light of our responsibility to the neighboring community, especially during evening and early morning hours.

On a related note, Harvard-Yale weekend is quickly approaching, and I hope that you will enjoy the festivities and the spirit of the weekend. The College has planned a number of events starting with the Pep Rally in the Yard on Thursday and culminating with the tailgate and The Game on Saturday. Please remember to be aware of your surroundings and behavior to ensure your safety and the safety of others. As always we expect that you and your guests will be good citizens, complying with College policy and city ordinances during the weekend.

Benedict H. Gross Leverett Professor of Mathematics Dean of Harvard College
