COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE DEAN Update from the Dean of Harvard College and the Undergraduate Council regarding Party Grants

  • David Pilbeam
  • Dean of Harvard College
November 2007

Dear Members of the Harvard College Community:

We are pleased to announce that the Office of the Dean of Harvard College and the Undergraduate Council (UC) have resolved the issues surrounding the UC Party Fund while ensuring that campus social life remains both vibrant and responsible.

The Undergraduate Council Finance Committee has suspended the alcohol reimbursement of all UC Party Grants effective immediately. Although the costs of alcohol will not be reimbursed, the UC Party Grant program will continue through reimbursements of $100 or $200 for non-alcoholic costs borne by student hosts of private social events. As always, 100% of receipts must be submitted by grant recipients and will be audited before students receive reimbursement checks. At the turn of the semester, the Undergraduate Council will review the Party Grant program in its entirety. More information is available on the UC website at www.uc.fas.harvard.edu

In addition, the Office of the Dean of Harvard College and the Undergraduate Council have joined together to promote safer social events hosted by student groups and House Committees. The Office of Student Activities has provided the funding and support to the UC Finance Committee to distribute every semester ten Beverage Authorization Teams for four-hour sessions to social events hosted by student groups and House Committees (HoCos).

With the issue of the party fund alcohol reimbursement resolved, funds provided by the Undergraduate Council Fee will be accessible to the Undergraduate Council for its continued service to the Harvard undergraduate community.

Finally, we plan to meet with the Faculty Council later this month and will propose, for their endorsement, a process for resolving any future disagreements. We will also recommend that the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences appoint a committee to review, twenty five years after the establishment of the Undergraduate Council, its role and responsibility within the FAS.

Thank you for your patience as we work together to promote a safe and responsible social life on campus.

Yours sincerely,

David Pilbeam Dean of Harvard College
