COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE DEAN Message from Dean Pilbeam regarding HUIDs

  • David Pilbeam
  • Dean of Harvard College
January 2008

As you may have heard, a student has produced counterfeit Harvard University identification cards. As you know, Harvard IDs can be used to gain initial access to the entryways of Houses and dormitories. We do not believe that this incident has created a safety risk for the community. Nevertheless, the University is taking this as an occasion to review facilities access procedures. I want to remind you that you can help keep your environment secure by following some simple procedures: Do not prop doors open or alter the locks on doors, and dont let strangers piggyback into the building behind you. Those who are allowed access to the building should be able to swipe their own card for access. Dont be afraid to ask questions. Dont hesitate to call Harvard University Police if you see someone acting in a suspicious manner.

Also, you should know that to date there is no indication that the student had access to personal information, financial records, Social Security numbers, or credit card information. A Harvard identification number alone does not provide access to any private information relating to students, faculty, or staff.
